An orchid pot does much more than simply hold the plant. The container, potting media, roots, water, and air all work together to create the environment around the root system.
Different pots manage that environment differently. Some containers have numerous openings that allow water to drain and air to circulate freely, while others retain moisture longer. The material, shape, size, and ventilation of the pot can all influence how quickly the root zone dries after watering.
This is why the pot and potting media should be considered together. A moisture-retentive medium in a poorly ventilated container behaves very differently from the same medium in a highly ventilated orchid pot.
Size matters too. Moving an orchid into a much larger pot doesn't necessarily help it grow faster. An oversized container can hold more wet potting media than the existing root system needs and may take considerably longer to dry.
And remember, roots growing outside the container aren't automatically a problem. Many orchids naturally produce aerial roots, so roots extending beyond the pot don't necessarily mean the orchid needs a larger container.
Choose an orchid pot for the environment it creates around the roots—not simply for how it looks.

Clear plastic pots are lightweight, inexpensive, and allow you to see the roots and monitor moisture inside the pot. Many are available with drainage holes specifically for orchids.
Keep in mind: Plastic itself doesn't breathe, so drainage and ventilation openings are important.

Slotted pots have additional openings along the sides of the container, allowing more air to reach the root zone and water to drain freely.
Best for: Growers who want increased airflow and faster drying around the roots.

Unglazed terracotta is porous, allowing moisture to evaporate through the container while providing a heavy, stable base for the plant.
Keep in mind: Orchid roots can attach firmly to the rough clay surface, which may make future repotting more difficult.

Wooden or plastic orchid baskets provide excellent drainage and very open airflow around the root system. Roots can also grow freely through the openings.
Best for: Orchids with extensive aerial roots and orchids that prefer a very open growing environment.

Some orchids can be attached to cork, wood, tree fern, or other suitable surfaces, closely resembling the way many epiphytic orchids grow in nature.
Keep in mind: Mounted orchids can dry very quickly and may require more frequent watering, especially indoors or in dry climates.

Glass orchid pots can provide root visibility, stability, and moisture retention, but their performance depends heavily on the design of the container.
Glass pots specifically designed with air and drainage openings can allow greater circulation around the root zone while giving the grower a view of what's happening inside.
Keep in mind: A decorative glass container without appropriate drainage or ventilation behaves very differently from a glass pot specifically designed for growing orchids.
There are many successful ways to grow an orchid, and no single type of pot is right for every orchid or every grower. At Orchidology, we choose to grow many of our orchids in glass because it gives us several characteristics we value in the root environment.
Our handblown orchid pots aren't designed simply to hold an orchid or make it look beautiful. The material, openings, shape, and form of the pot all influence the environment surrounding the roots.
One of the biggest differences between glass and a porous material such as unglazed clay is that glass is nonporous and doesn't absorb water from the root environment.
Clay can wick moisture from the potting media and evaporate it through the walls of the container. Glass doesn't behave that way. Moisture leaves primarily through the openings in the pot, the surface of the media, and normal evaporation around the plant.
In our growing conditions, this means our orchids in glass can often retain moisture around their roots longer and require less frequent watering than orchids we grow in highly porous containers.
Because the glass itself isn't wicking moisture away, humidity can remain higher inside the pot after watering. We sometimes think of this as a small greenhouse-like environment around the root system—moisture remains available while the openings in the pot allow air exchange.

We don't necessarily need to soak an orchid every time we water it. With many of the orchids we grow in our glass pots, a thorough spray or quick watering can rehydrate the roots and potting media without requiring the entire container to be soaked.
Because the glass itself isn't absorbing the water, we're watering the orchid and its root environment—not the pot.
How often watering is needed will still depend on the orchid, potting media, temperature, humidity, airflow, and growing conditions.
Glass by itself doesn't provide airflow, which is why the design of the pot matters.
Our orchid pots incorporate openings that allow air to move through the root zone and excess water to escape. This helps create the balance between moisture and air that we've emphasized throughout this guide.
A solid decorative glass vase without appropriate openings would behave very differently from a glass container specifically designed for growing orchids.
Clear glass can also give the grower a view into the root environment. When the glass and color allow it, being able to observe root condition, moisture, and new root growth can provide useful information about the plant.
However, because our pots are handblown in a variety of colors and finishes, root visibility isn't the primary feature of every Orchidology pot. We consider it an added benefit when the design allows it rather than a requirement for successfully growing in glass.
Handblown glass also provides weight and stability. This can be particularly useful for orchids that become top-heavy as leaves, flower spikes, and aerial roots develop.
A substantial base can help keep the plant stable without requiring an unnecessarily oversized container.
And of course, we love glass because it's beautiful.
Handblown glass allows the orchid and its container to become part of the same presentation. But at Orchidology, the appearance of the pot isn't the only reason we grow this way.
The nonporous surface, moisture retention, humid root environment, circulation openings, stability, and—in some designs—root visibility all contribute to why glass works well with the way we grow orchids.
Glass isn't automatically the best choice for every orchid or every growing environment. It's simply the growing method we've developed around the conditions we want to create for our orchids' roots.

Orchid potting media changes as it ages. Bark can soften and decompose, while sphagnum moss can become compacted and hold moisture differently.
If the medium is breaking apart, staying wet much longer than it used to, becoming compacted, or developing a stale or sour smell, it may be time to repot.
Remember: Repot because the root environment needs refreshing—not simply because a certain amount of time has passed.

As an orchid grows, it may eventually reach a point where its current container no longer provides enough room for healthy future growth.
For sympodial orchids, watch the direction of the newest growth. If new growths have reached the edge of the pot with nowhere left to continue, it may be time to repot.
Remember: Aerial roots growing outside the pot are normal for many orchids and don't automatically mean the plant needs a larger container.

Sometimes repotting becomes necessary because something is wrong below the surface.
If you suspect root rot, deteriorating roots, or compacted media, removing the orchid from its container allows you to inspect the root system and correct the growing environment.
Remember: Preserve healthy roots whenever possible. Dead, mushy, hollow, or badly deteriorated roots can be addressed during repotting with clean tools.
Repotting isn't about giving an orchid a bigger pot. It's about giving the roots a healthy place to continue growing.

Gather your new pot, fresh orchid media, and clean cutting tools before removing the orchid from its current container.
Choose a pot that comfortably accommodates the existing root system and allows room for appropriate future growth.
Before you begin: Clean or sterilize cutting tools to reduce the chance of spreading plant pathogens.

Gently remove the orchid from its existing pot. Avoid pulling or forcing the plant, especially if roots have attached themselves to the container.
Loosen the potting media carefully and work the roots free with as little damage as possible.
Take your time: Healthy orchid roots are worth protecting.

Carefully remove old potting media from around the root system, particularly material that has broken down, compacted, or deteriorated.
You don't need to make every root perfectly clean. The goal is to remove old material without unnecessarily damaging healthy roots.

Now that you can see the root system, examine it carefully.
Healthy roots are generally firm, while badly deteriorated roots may be mushy, hollow, or collapsing. Remove clearly dead or rotting roots with clean cutting tools while preserving healthy tissue whenever possible.
This is your opportunity to see what's really happening below the surface.

Place the orchid into its new container according to its growth habit. Avoid burying the crown, rhizome, or new growth too deeply in the potting media.
For sympodial orchids, leave appropriate room in the direction the plant is actively growing.
Think about where the orchid is going—not only where it is today.

Gently work fresh potting media around the roots, filling the spaces without crushing roots or packing the medium excessively tightly.
The orchid should be secure in its container, but the root zone should still maintain the airflow and drainage the plant needs.
Finish with a stable plant and an open, breathable root environment.
For the eventual images, this is one section where I strongly recommend we eventually use six photographs from one actual repotting session rather than unrelated stock images. That would make the sequence immediately understandable:
A recently repotted orchid may need some time to adjust to its new root environment. A brief pause in visible growth doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.
Avoid repeatedly disturbing the plant to check the roots. Give it time to settle.
After repotting isn't the time to change everything at once. Keep the orchid's light, temperature, humidity, and airflow reasonably consistent while it adjusts.
Water according to the needs of the orchid and the new potting media rather than automatically returning to the exact schedule you followed before repotting.
Pay attention to what the orchid does next. Fresh root tips, new leaves, new growths, and continued development are good signs that the plant is establishing itself.
Recovery may happen gradually, so focus on the direction the plant is moving rather than expecting an immediate transformation.
A successful repot gives the orchid a healthier root environment. From there, your job is simply to give the plant time and appropriate conditions to grow into it.

Flowering also requires resources, but fertilizer shouldn't be treated as a switch that makes an orchid bloom. Light, maturity, temperature, overall plant health, and the orchid's natural growth cycle all play a role in flowering.
The goal isn't to feed an orchid as much as possible. It's to provide appropriate nutrition as one part of an already healthy growing environment.
Fertilizer supports good orchid care—it doesn't replace it.

Nitrogen plays an important role in leaf, stem, and overall vegetative growth. It is also a component of proteins, chlorophyll, and other compounds the orchid needs to build healthy tissue.
Think: Green growth and plant development.

Phosphorus is involved in energy transfer, root development, and reproductive processes within the plant.
You may see fertilizers marketed as “bloom boosters” because they contain higher phosphorus levels, but more phosphorus doesn't automatically mean more flowers.
Think: Energy, roots, and reproduction.

Potassium helps regulate many processes throughout the plant, including water balance, movement of nutrients, and overall plant function.
It contributes to the orchid's ability to maintain healthy growth and respond to its environment.

A fertilizer labeled 20-20-20 contains 20% nitrogen (N), 20% available phosphate (P₂O₅), and 20% soluble potash (K₂O) by weight. The numbers tell you the fertilizer's nutrient analysis—they don't tell you how much fertilizer to give your orchid.
When an orchid is actively producing new roots, leaves, shoots, or pseudobulbs, it is building new plant tissue and can make good use of available nutrients.
Fresh green root tips and developing new growth are useful signs that the orchid is actively growing.
Good time to feed: When the orchid is healthy and showing active growth.
Many orchids naturally go through periods when growth slows. Seasonal changes, cooler temperatures, shorter days, or the orchid's natural growth cycle can reduce how quickly it develops.
During slower periods, the plant may use nutrients less rapidly, so fertilizer may need to be reduced rather than applied at the same rate year-round.
Let the plant's growth help guide you.
Avoid applying a concentrated fertilizer solution to extremely dry orchid roots. Watering first or applying fertilizer to an already appropriately hydrated root system can reduce the risk of exposing dry roots to concentrated fertilizer salts.
The goal is to deliver nutrients gently and not overwhelm the roots.
A schedule can help you remember to fertilize, but it shouldn't replace observing the plant.
Consider active growth, root condition, season, watering frequency, and the strength of the fertilizer you're using. Two orchids growing beside each other may not always need exactly the same feeding routine.
Feed according to what the orchid is doing and not simply because the calendar says it's time.
Fertilizer is a supplement, not a shortcut. Giving an orchid more fertilizer than it can use won't make it grow faster and too much can seriously damage the plant.
When fertilizer is mixed too strongly or applied too frequently, dissolved fertilizer salts can accumulate around the roots and in the potting media. Instead of helping the orchid, this creates a stressful root environment and can interfere with the plant's ability to take up water.
The roots are often the first place you'll see damage. Excess fertilizer can injure or “burn” sensitive root tissue, causing healthy root tips to stop growing and damaged roots to turn brown, dry, or deteriorate. Once the root system is compromised, the orchid has a harder time absorbing the water and nutrients it actually needs.
The effects can eventually appear throughout the plant. Leaves may develop brown or burned tips and edges, growth may slow, and the orchid can begin to weaken. Flowers may fade or drop prematurely when the plant is under significant stress. Severe or repeated overfertilization can cause extensive root loss and, if the problem continues, can eventually kill the orchid.
More fertilizer therefore doesn't mean more growth or more flowers.
A smaller, appropriate amount of fertilizer applied consistently is far safer than trying to push an orchid to grow faster with a stronger dose.

An orchid receiving too few nutrients over a long period may develop slower or weaker growth, smaller new growths, or changes in leaf color.
But don't immediately assume fertilizer is the problem. Poor roots, insufficient light, improper watering, or other growing conditions can produce similar symptoms.
Before feeding more: Make sure the rest of the orchid's growing environment is healthy.

With appropriate nutrition and good growing conditions, an orchid can steadily produce healthy roots, leaves, and new growth without being pushed beyond its natural growth rate.
Consistent, moderate feeding is generally more useful than occasional heavy doses.
The goal: Support the growth the orchid is naturally producing not force it to grow faster.

Excess fertilizer can cause salts to accumulate around the roots and in the potting media. You may notice brown or damaged root tips, declining roots, burned leaf tips, or white crusty deposits on the pot or media.
Continued overfertilization can weaken the entire plant.
If you see signs of buildup: Stop adding fertilizer and address the accumulated salts before feeding again.
Every time you fertilize an orchid, small amounts of dissolved minerals can remain behind after the water evaporates. Over time, these fertilizer salts can accumulate on the potting media, around the roots, and on the container itself.
You may notice this buildup as a white or chalky crust on bark, moss, roots, or around the openings and edges of the pot. Mineral-heavy water can contribute to this buildup as well.
Too much accumulated salt can create a harsh environment around sensitive orchid roots. Root tips may become damaged or stop growing, and the orchid may have more difficulty absorbing the water and nutrients it needs.
One simple way to help reduce buildup is to periodically water the orchid thoroughly with plain water and allow plenty of water to drain through the root zone. This helps carry some accumulated fertilizer salts out of the pot rather than allowing them to continue concentrating around the roots.
This is another reason good drainage matters. Flushing only works when excess water—and the dissolved minerals it carries—can leave the container.
If heavy buildup continues to return, take another look at your fertilizer strength, how frequently you're feeding, and the quality of the water you're using.
Fertilize to support the roots, and occasionally give those roots a clean-water reset.
